GSG 24-26 CWU Solidarity Fund
23/July/2026
Description
As you will be aware, CWU members employed by Covalen have been engaged in a series of prolonged industrial actions, including several days of strike action, since the beginning of this year.
These members are fighting for the fundamental right to union recognition and collective bargaining, while also resisting significant redundancies. Above all, they are standing up for dignity, fairness, and respect in the workplace in the face of an employer that has shamefully refused to provide redundancy payments to many of the affected workers leaving them jobless, penniless and in some cases, homeless
Many delegates will have heard members of our newly established Digital and Techworker Alliance (DATA) Branch address Conference. Their contribution highlighted both the challenges they face and their pride in being members of the Communications Workers’ Union. The solidarity and support shown by delegates from across the Union provided a significant boost to members during this difficult campaign.
The message from Conference was clear: their struggle is our struggle.
A number of Branches have asked how they can support these members. In response, the Union is establishing a Solidarity Fund to assist CWU members in Covalen and to strengthen our wider organising efforts within the digital and technology sector as this campaign continues.
Branches are invited, to make a financial contribution to the fund and to encourage solidarity initiatives among their members. Contributions will provide practical assistance to members who have participated in industrial action and will demonstrate that the wider Union movement stands firmly alongside them in their fight for justice and respect at work.
Details for contributions are as follows:
Bank: Bank of Ireland – CWU Current Account
Address: 2 College Green, Dublin 2
IBAN: IE51 BOFI 9000 1717 1196 81
BIC: BOFIIE2D
The DATA Branch will continue its efforts to organise and build membership throughout the sector, and the Covalen campaign represents a key part of that strategy. The determination, resilience, and courage shown by these members reflects the very best traditions of our Union. Continued support and solidarity from Branches across the country will make a meaningful and practical difference.
On behalf of the members involved, we would like to thank Branches in advance for their support, generosity, and solidarity.
