GSG 08-25 Raise the Roof Housing Campaign Rally

10/June/2025

Description

The Raise the Roof campaign group, coordinated by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, is holding a rally outside Leinster House on Tuesday 17th June 2025 at 6pm. The rally is timed to coincide with a Private Members’ motion, tabled by the Opposition parties in the Dáil. The motion calls for emergency action by government on the housing and homelessness crises.

The stark statistics are a damning indictment of successive governments as over the last ten years:

  • Homelessness has quadrupled increasing to 15,418
  • Current shortfall of homes is at least 250,000
  • House prices have doubled
  • Rents are completely out of control

The current level of rents, right across the country, make it impossible for many renters to have a decent standard of living, never mind save for a home of their own. Workers, struggling with the inflation increases, cannot afford the extortionate house prices or exorbitant rent increases.

Government’s emergency response to this national disaster displays an air of resignation, offering no hope, no solution. It has reduced itself to be nothing more than passive bystanders.

While the impact of it’s most recent initiative to tackle the housing crises by tinkering with the regulation governing rental increases remains to be seen, it will not address the central cause of this crisis – the lack of investment in and delivery of public housing to meet social and affordable housing need.

The time for action has well passed and we must deliver a strong message to this heedless government, demanding immediate and sustained action to tackle the housing crisis.

Members are requested to make every effort to attend and display your displeasure at the failure of government to provide homes and to demand immediate action to alleviate this plight on workers and their families.

The CWU delegation will assemble at the corner of Buswells Hotel from 5.45pm.
