GSG 05-26 Recent Pension Protest Rally

13/February/2026

Description

I wish to express my appreciation to everyone who participated in the protest rally at the Dáil, despite the very bad weather. The huge gathering of approximately 3,000, made it a tremendous success. We delivered a clear message to Government that the ongoing and continuing delays to the approval of pension increases is unacceptable. We would also like to thank those who have contacted their TDs and sought their support for our campaign.

The confirmation of approval in An Post on the eve of the protest is a positive development that now requires approval by the Minister for Public Expenditure, Infrastructure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation.

Furthermore, there has been no indication of approval for eir pensioners and the outstanding approval of retrospective superannuation arrangements for those retired on health grounds in An Post.

It is imperative we do not let up in the campaign and that we keep the pressure on Government’s collective responsibility to address these issues without further delay. In this regard, I have written to both Ministers, a copy of which I attach for your information.

It would be most helpful if members and retired members also make contact with their TDs, particularly those in government parties, to highlight the need for immediate approvals and ask them to make representations to both Ministers to have the three issues finalised and paid as soon as possible. They should be reminded that all of the increases have gone through a vigorous process including NewERA and will cost the exchequer nothing.

Again, we would like to thank members and pensioners for their commitment to-date, and we know that you will continue to support the CWU campaign to ensure that agreed pension increases are honoured and all future approvals are endorsed in a timely manner.

Please bring this circular to the attention of all members including those who have retired.
