GSG 04-26 Pension Campaign Update

09/February/2026

Description

This morning the Union received correspondence from Charlie McConalogue T.D., Minister of State for Sport and Postal Policy, advising that he has now signed off on the An Post pension increase. While this is a step forward, members should be clear that this does not conclude the matter. Formal approval must still be secured from the Minister for Public Expenditure, Infrastructure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation, and no indication has been given as to when this approval will be sought or how much longer pensioners will be required to wait.

Crucially, the correspondence also makes no reference whatsoever to eir pensioners, who remain without approval for their agreed increases, and it fails entirely to address the Union’s demand for retrospective approval of superannuation payments to staff retired on health grounds — an issue affecting some of the most vulnerable pensioners.

For clarity, the Union’s demands remain unchanged:

  1. Approve without further delay the agreed increases to retired staff of eir and An Post
  2. Extend retrospectively, without further delay, the agreed and Ministerial approved changes to superannuation on health grounds in An Post

So far, the pressure we have be putting on the Government has delivered some movement. However, we need to keep the pressure on to get all demands met – We will be proceeding with our rally tomorrow at Dáil Éireann, Tuesday 10th February at 1pm. This is a key moment in the campaign, and your support in ensuring a strong presence on the day is critical.
