General Update, 1st September 2010

Following the open meetings which have taken place in various parts of the country with Coastguard volunteers and given the number of completed application forms that have been returned to CWU Head Office, the Union wrote to the Director of the Irish Coastguards, Mr Chris Reynolds, in early August.

The Union subsequently received a reply advising that it should contact the Department of Transport in order to request a negotiating licence for the group in question.

Contact has now been made with the Department and the CWU hopes to, at least initially, have an informal exploratory meeting with the appropriate persons.

I appreciate the patience of the members with this process so far and everyone should be aware that, regardless of where this journey may end up, it will take some time, but the CWU will endeavour to keep you informed every step of the way.  If there are colleagues in your unit or your area who have not yet been invited to join the CWU, I would encourage you to take this update as a reason to extend that invitation to them.

Further updates will be issued in due course as appropriate.
