An Post is a State-owned limited company which was established in 1984 under the terms of the Postal Telecommunications Services Act (1983). At that time the Irish government split the Department of Post and Telecoms into two semi-State companies, namely An Post and Telecom Eireann (the telecommunications company). Since that time the Company has transformed from its civil service days, operating successfully in an ever-opening market and increasing competitors. The Company has a workforce of approximately 10,000 employees and is the main service provider in the postal industry in the 26 counties of the Republic of Ireland. The Company plays an important part in daily life in every household and business in the country, and acts as a trusted intermediary for mail, personal finance and business transactions. In providing these, it has a unique reach through its retail network, employees, and the products and services it provides. The CWU is the principal union representing nearly 90% of the staff.
